âWhat happened to you?â
I sit on the edge of my bed, my aching head resting in my hands. Palm pressing into my eye-sockets to numb the discomfort.
âGo away, Artemis,â I moan, shivering against a cool sweat breaking out over my chest.
If this is a hangover, Iâm never drinking or touching any form of drug ever again. Itâs atrocious.
Artemis sniffs, and I hear his footsteps pause a few feet away. âWhy do you smell like a roast pigeon?â
I really donât want to know how he knows what that smells like. Blindly, I reach out a hand to try to shove him off, but heâs just out of reach. âMake yourself useful and get me some water.â
âI can do that, but first Iâve been ordered to tell you by a very rude old woman that you need to come downstairs. She said she doesnât like to be kept waiting.â
âPlease tell me youâre kidding.â
âNope,â he says, lips popping. âShe got here hours ago. Moved in down the hall. Master Kincaid said to stay out of her way. That she was here to train you.â
âWhat time is it?â
âAlmost three?â
âIn the morning?â
With the heavy blanket I threw over the window, itâs impossible to tell the time, but I know Iâm only giving myself false hope.
âConsidering you got home at four in the morningâ¦â
âWill you just,â I wave him over, âdo your thing, please. My head feels like itâs splitting in two.â
Artemis rests his hands on the back of my head, and I tremble as a seeking warmth radiates down my spine, numbing some of the pain. The throbbing behind my eyes dulls to a barely noticeable thudding and when I open my eyes for the second time this morning, they donât burn quite as much.
âThank you,â I murmur. âAnd Iâm sorry about last night. I wasâ¦I donât know what I was.â
âSexually frustrated?â
âArt.â
âFine. Iâll stop. You just make it so easy to get under your skin.â
âIf I ever decide I want kids, talk me out of it, okay?â
Artemis laughs and helps me up, squinting at the state of me. Iâm afraid to ask, but it turns out I donât have to. Heâs perfectly happy to tell me exactly what he sees. The little shit.
âYou look like you got run over by a truck.â
âThanks. Thatâs sweet.â
âAnd I think thereâs a birdâs nest in the back of your head.â
âOut. Get out before I eat your soul, you little heathen.â
He rushes away with a chuckle and calls back, âThat old lady said sheâs going to drag you down there if you donât come on your own! Iâd hurry if I were you. She doesnât seem like the type to mess around.â
